Florida Panthers defenceman Robert Svehla, who played 599 of the team's last 605 games, has retired following a contract dispute.

Svehla's agent sent a fax to the Panthers on Wednesday and the defenceman spoke briefly by phone with Panthers GM Rick Dudley.

"I have very nice memories, so I'm happy with the decision," Svehla told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel from his home in Slovakia.
